75 killed, 192 missing after Guatemala’s volcano spews more ash & mudflows

That volcano caused pyroclastic flows, which are essentially avalanches of gas, rock, lava and ash that can move at 50 miles per hour or faster. Rescuers were also evacuated Tuesday.

People of the villages skirting Guatemala's Volcano of Fire have begun mourning the few dead who could be identified after an eruption killed dozens by engulfing them in floods of searing ash and mud.

But over 200 people are still missing, and the emergency services are working hard to find them.

Authorities have said the window is closing on the chances of finding anyone else alive in the devastation.

Guatemala's disaster agency said that a new column of smoke and ash was rising from the volcano Tuesday and that hot gas and molten rock was descending down its south side, AP reports. "And if heavy machinery comes in they will be torn apart".

The explosions have reduced the once-verdant area to a moonscape of ash.

A photo released by Guatemalan authorities shows buildings and trucks covered in white volcanic ash from the Volcán de Fuego (Volcano of Fire), seen erupting in the top-right image. But then a huge cloud of ash came pouring out.

"Nobody wants to go back there". "They are taking away our opportunity to say goodbye".

More than 3,000 people have been displaced.

"We were suffocating, couldn't breathe", said Maria Gomez. "For us, there is no tomorrow". Some 46 people were injured, around half of whom are in serious condition, it said.

"My respects to you heroes without cloak", one said.

"This can serve as a tiny bit of consolation for the people", Diaz said.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from seven communities in the Escuintla area near the summit, as panicked locals rushed to their cars to escape, causing chaotic traffic.

Cecilio Chacaj, a spokesman for the municipal firefighters department, said the bodies of another nine victims have been recovered on Wednesday. An Associated Press journalist witnessed five stretchers carrying bags containing human remains being carried out of Los Lotes. Another 3,319 were in shelters, their homes and livelihoods destroyed.

As President Jimmy Morales toured the area and met with survivors on Monday, a woman begged him to help her loved ones in Los Lotes.

Perez D. reported from Escuintla, Guatemala.
