Arsenal agree £26.4m deal to sign Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira

Arsenal are understood to be close to deals for both Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno and Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Arsenal have continued their attempt to add greater steel through the spine of the squad by holding talks over the potential signing of Uruguay and Sampdoria holding midfielder Lucas Torreira.

Leno has made 304 appearances for Leverkusen, but could be on the way out after the Bundesliga side recently signed Lukas Hradecky from Frankfurt on a five-year deal.

Leno, 26, is seen as a long-term replacement for Petr Cech at Arsenal, while Torreira is the Gunners' top midfield target.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel described his change of heart as "sobering and a little depressing". Joining that view was Nicholas Burns, a former USA undersecretary of state under President George W.

It is already looking like it will be a big summer for the Gunners, with Unai Emery having taken on the challenge of replacing Arsene Wenger, who held his post for 22 years, although had let the squad diminish into a team of average players.

He has become a key player at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and is ranked among the best defensive midfielders in Serie A. He has one Uruguay cap and was included in Óscar Tabárez's World Cup squad for the tournament in Russian Federation this summer.

The news will be a blow to Liverpool as they had seemingly identified Leno as a cheaper alternative to the likes of Alisson Becker and Jan Oblak as Jurgen Klopp looks to sign a new keeper following Loris Karius's horror show in the Champions League final.
