Gabriela on Duterte kissing OFW: 'Disgusting theatrics of a misogynist'

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has drawn sharp condemnation from politicians and women's rights activists, after he asked a woman to kiss him on the lips, as hundreds of his supporters watched and shrieked during a public event in South Korea.

"Gabriela views President Duterte's recent kissing of a migrant Filipina during his meet-and-greet with Filipino OFWs in South Korea as the disgusting theatrics of a misogynist president who feels entitled to demean, humiliate, or disrespect women according to his whim", said the party in a statement on Monday, June 4.

The two women then approached the president on stage, and as a sign of gratitude after receiving the book, both of them kissed the president's right hand, before attempting to leave.

"Come here! Where's my (kiss)", Duterte said, instructing her to explain to her husband - after learning he was not among the audience - that they were engaging in a "joke".

Duterte sought a kiss from the woman after he called her on stage to give her a copy of a book at the event in Seoul.

"Don't take that seriously", Duterte later told the crowd.

"You only live once", he told around 2,000 Filipino workers gathered at the convention center.

The left-wing group Karapatan said that with that statement Duterte had "distinguished himself as a frothing-in-the-mouth fascist who incites the worst violations of worldwide humanitarian law".

Merkel comments on Eurozone reform show move
But Merkel was adamant that solidarity among eurozone countries should not lead to a "debt union". As an alternative to European Union defense forces, Mr.

"Even if the act was consensual, it was the president, possessed of awesome, even intimidating power, who initiated it", Hontiveros said in a statement sent to Al Jazeera.

"I assure you, for me and even the President, there was no malice in the kiss", she said.

In the 2016 presidential election campaign Duterte sparked controversy over comments made on the rape and killing of an Australian missionary during a prison riot in the southern city of Davao in 1989 while he was the mayor.

"There wasn't malice in it", she said.

Duterte however first asked the lady if she was single and found out she has a boyfriend. His office later apologized, but he said nothing himself in public.

Earlier this year, he told Filipino soldiers to shoot female communist rebels in the vagina.

Making the rounds also on social media was a spoof photo of the same kiss, but with the woman replaced by superimposed image of China's President Xi Jinping, in an attempt to poke fun at Mr Duterte's high regard for his Chinese counterpart.

Duterte, who has a daughter by his current partner after splitting from his wife, is wildly popular at home but has angered many Filipinos for his allegedly misogynistic comments.
