Mexico Upsets Germany With 1-0 Win in World Cup Opener

Word champions Germany were stunned by Mexico in the Group-F opener of the FIFA World Cup 2018 at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Mexico won their opening match at a World Cup for the fifth time in their past six tournaments (drawing the other).

Mexico clearly came into the game planning to counter-attack overly aggressive German attacks. The Germans were also visibly slower when faced with frequent runs from Hernandez and Lozano, finding themselves backtracking all too often, and not being able to put bodies behind and in front of Neuer in goal. One of Mexico's counter-attacks caught Sami Khedira nearly 40 yards behind the play.

Mexico's next opponent is South Korea.

But the day belonged to forward Hirving Lozano, who scored the game's only goal late in the first half, and goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who made that score stand up with a brilliant performance, turning away nine shots to shut Germany out.

It hadn't lost an opening game since 1982.

Mexico were also impressive in defense.

Brazil's squad will be considered failures should they not claim their sixth World Cup title in Russian Federation , according to the legendary Rivaldo.

Germany had the more possession but it was Mexico who were more creative.

And if they finish runners-up to the Mexicans, Germany could be on course to face Brazil in a daunting second-round matchup.

Neuer held well twice in quick succession, first from a long-range Hector Herrera strike and then again to keep out Hector Moreno's header, as Mexico attacked the Germany backline with regularity.

The mistakes started at the back for Germany, with Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng sloppy with their passing. "In the second half we were better, Mexico got exhausted, but we did not score, although there were enough chances for at least one". Nearly immediately, they had a chance to level only for Guilhermo Ochoa to push Kroos' free-kick onto the bar with his fingertips. Marvin Plattenhardt is in at left back; German media reported Jonas Hector has an illness. Die Mannschaft have to hope Hector is healthy enough to play against Sweden. Not that, they went on the defensive mode but took their chances whenever the German backline was caught out of position.

Given the numbers they were committing forward, Germany were surprisingly toothless in attack.

"There will always be obstacles to overcome and in the next match we have to be much better".

While change has been forthcoming for Germany, two things have remained stable: success and Joachim Low.
