Up until now, the German government has largely adopted a policy of quiet disapproval in Trump's direction, but Maas broke the silence ahead of the summit, which began on Friday.

President Donald Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G7 Summit on Friday and despite his Twitter bluster the night before, seemed to suggest the relationship between the two leaders was just fine.

At least three of Trump's fellow Republicans in the U.S. Senate, all frequent critics of the president, assailed his suggestion of readmitting Russian Federation to the group. "If it doesn't happen, we come out even better!" the president wrote on Twitter, hours before he's due to arrive in Quebec.

Friday morning he was spitting again: "Canada charges the USA a 270% tariff on Dairy Products!" Then he pulled the USA out of the Paris accord the following week. Right now, we are not going to live with the deals the way they are. Canadian and Mexican authorities also said they would take retaliatory steps.

The comments followed a string of tweets from the president railing against Canada, France and other European allies for what the president has described as an imbalanced trade relationship.

As tempers frayed, Trump had a ready retort, via tweet: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the USA massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers". That resulted in the an overall $8.4 billion surplus in goods and services with Canada in 2017, according to the U.S. Trade Representative's office. "Look forward to seeing them tomorrow".

But officials from the three countries have been unable to find consensus on several critical issues, leading to finger-pointing between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in recent days.

Earlier in Ottawa, Macron and Trudeau offered an olive branch of sorts by offering Trump a modest measure of support in his historic meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un following the G7 summit.

This year's G7 summit, which will take place in Charlevoix, Quebec, is the 44th. Other members of the Group of Seven are France, Italy, Japan, Germany and Britain. The EU is also attending the summit. Trump is set to hold a series of group and one-on-one meetings, including with Trudeau and Macron.

"G-7 Sherpa and Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs Everett Eissenstat will represent the United States for the remaining G-7 sessions", she added. His predecessors pressed for freer global trade and championed a trading system that required countries to follow World Trade Organization rules.

"It is evident that the American president and the rest of the group continue to disagree on trade, climate change and the Iran nuclear deal", Tusk admitted. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin declined to sign a joint G-7 statement last week at a meeting with finance ministers.

At last year's G7 summit in Sicily, the leaders all signed a communique, but the statement made clear there were deep differences on the Paris climate change accord.

Trump does not intend to withdraw from NAFTA, National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said on "Fox & Friends". They feature heavily scripted discussions with a bias toward consensus, so genuine news only rarely emerges.
