Amazon has millions of merchants selling goods on its marketplace, mostly small and medium-businesses that had sales exceeding $1 billion during the promotion, Amazon said in a statement.

The next-largest online retailer, eBay (EBAY), has just 6.6 percent of online sales.

In Europe, however, Amazon employees were using Prime Day to draw attention to their complaints against the company. According to Verdi, the biggest German union in the services sector, 2,400 workers were taking part.

Amazon created Prime Day in 2015 to mark its 20th anniversary, and its success has inspired other e-commerce companies to invent shopping holidays.

Rocco Braeuniger, Amazon Australia Country Manager, asserts local response to Prime "exceeded" expectations, with more member incentives to be rolled out soon.
