Seven-time champion Williams had been bidding to claim a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam crown but made too many errors as Kerber ran out a comfortable victor in the final.

Kerber was the worst possible matchup for Serena, as she presented a much different challenge than the six women Serena defeated en route to the final. "You have to go through all the things - the good things, the bad things - and then you need to learn", said Kerber, the first German to win Wimbledon since Steffi Graf in 1996. "When I retired it didn't even cross my mind - the possibility of coming back".

"If you want to go back to work, and to me after becoming a mum, I feel like there's no pressure to do that because having a child is a completely full-time job". I'm just that person, that vessel, that's saying, 'You can be whatever you want to be.

"It's obviously disappointing, but I can not be disappointed. I know she's going to really enjoy it and enjoy the moment". I knew that I have to play my best tennis against a champion like Serena.

And when she swung her racket, the measure was nearly always true.

"I was trying to play my best to play for you guys". And she totally did. Kerber made Serena look sluggish winning more than 2/3rds of her service points, particularly doing well on the second serve, and also breaking Serena 4 times in the match, compared to just a lone break for Williams.

Djokovic 'overwhelmed' after downing Nadal in Wimbledon classic
No other sport calls on a single person to exert such energy-both mental and physical-for as long a time as tennis does. The two obvious angles are set and game handicap lines, with Djokovic 3-0 and Djokovic -5.5 games the considerations.

It also stopped her joining Court, Evonne Goolagong and Kim Clijsters as the only mothers to win Grand Slam titles in the professional era.

And with the calm dignity that she has shown throughout the entire duration of this tournament, Serena was gracious in defeat.

No matter that the stats were in her favour, as Williams herself admitted: "This for me was not inevitable".

"Without 2017, I couldn't win this tournament", Kerber said. "I was really hoping to get this far", she said as her voice started to break. "And I tried", said Williams, 36, just 10 months after a hard childbirth that was followed by grave medical complications. She was playing in the fourth tournament of her comeback.

Serena was pictured with her husband, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, at Meghan and Harry's stunning Royal Wedding in May. Serena was often forced out of position, obliged to react quickly and struggled to find the space she needed to hit big. Unforced error after unforced error led to her losing consecutive sets, 6-3, to fall short of the title. On this day, that often meant Serena overcooking shots or getting caught on the other side of the court as Kerber put away easy winners on long rallies.
