China files WTO challenge to Donald Trump's Dollars 200 billion tariff hike

President of the European Council Donald Tusk (in pic) and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will take part in the annual meeting with China in Beijing.

"This is why I am calling on our Chinese hosts, but also on Presidents Trump and Putin, to jointly start this process from a thorough reform of the WTO".

Germany's Green MEP Reinhard Butikofer said to the German newspaper, Die Welt: "In the European Union, we should be wary of the view that during Trump's time the Chinese would be our best friends".

His plea came a week after President Trump renewed his threat to impose tariffs on an extra $200 billion worth of Chinese goods, or almost half of what the United States imported past year from China.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady warned Sunday that President Donald Trump's tariffs against China could weaken economic growth and impede the results of tax cuts, due to their effects on industries across the nation.

The Beijing summit convened hours before Trump was slated to talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki - a fraught meeting further complicated by America's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

"The EU remains critical of China on several key issues, very much in line with the US administration, most notably subsidies" along with "remaining barriers to entry, particularly technology transfers requirements", said Federico Santi of Eurasia Group.

"These tariffs appear to breach each WTO Member's commitments under the WTO Agreement". European leaders have criticized Trump's tactics but share USA criticism of China's industrial policy and market barriers.

"We need new rules in the field of industrial subsidies, intellectual property and forced technology transfers, reduction of trade costs, as well as a new approach to development and more effective dispute settlement", said Tusk. "And it is our common responsibility to make it a change for the better".

Beijing officials seemed less inclined to send a message to the United States.

The one-sentence Commerce Ministry statement gave no legal grounds for the challenge or other details.

The comments from EU Council President Donald Tusk comes as the U.S. and China stand on the brink of an all-out trade war many fear could hammer the global economy, while the USA has also picked fights with allies in Europe and Canada.

"Our summit is not directed at any third party, " said Li.

Also Monday, the European Union urged the United States, China and Russian Federation to work together to ease worsening global trade tensions, warning that they could otherwise spiral into "conflict and chaos".

Trump even told the USA media on Sunday that both the European Union and China were "foes" to the United States, in trade and the economy respectively.

An EU report last month said Beijing imposed more new import and investment barriers in 2017 than any other government.

China announced it filed a World Trade Organisation challenge on Monday to US President Donald Trump's proposal for a tariff hike on United States dollars 200 billion of Chinese goods, reacting swiftly amid deepening concern about the economic impact of their spiralling technology dispute.

Earlier this month, German chemical company BSF received a green light to build a new $10 billion plant in the southern province of Guangdong after just three months of negotiations, according to two people close to the deal who were not authorized to speak to the media.
