Comcast alerts Xfinity Mobile customers of increased video and hotspot restrictions

The operator added that, later this year, it will allow customers to pay extra to stream video at 720p resolution.

As reported by The Verge, Xfinity Mobile will soon begin limiting data use in a couple of ways.

"If you have the Unlimited data option, your speeds on any device connected to a personal hotspot will not exceed 600kbps", Comcast told customers. Ironically, those paying "by the gig" will still get full 4G speeds, which doesn't seem to fall in line with the company's reasoning of "saving you money".

Comcast justified this move by referencing to other carriers who have unsurprisingly also started to restrict the video quality over cellular networks. The rules banned throttling, but they had an exception for "reasonable network management". Comcast doesn't operate its own cellular network, so it resells Verizon Wireless service.

Comcast is making some changes to their Xfinity Mobile wireless connection plan. One Comcast customer forwarded the email to Ars, and there's also a Reddit thread discussing the email. Their cellular connectivity speeds are downgraded to roughly 1.5Mbps, which isn't awful, but it's far from ideal for heavy data users.

Of course, the company added that "later this year, 720p video over cellular data will be available as a fee-based option with your service". Those numbers were slightly ahead of most Wall Street analyst expectations.

Mandatory evacuations in effect north of Sacramento
As of Monday there were 119 fire engines, 29 hand crews, 12 helicopters, 34 water tenders, 23 bulldozers and nine air tankers. Authorities have ordered residents to evacuate about 50 homes because of a wildfire north of Bend, Ore., in Warm Springs.

These changes will be rolling out over the coming weeks, according to Comcast.

The service now defaults all video to 480p resolution when streaming over cellular data.

Comcast called the video resolution limit at 480p "consistent with standard unlimited plans across carriers", in a statement to Engadget. Longer term, the company plans to introduce a plan with 720p video before the end of this year.

Both services rely on Wi-Fi for both voice and data, but revert back to Verizon's network for coverage where quality Wi-Fi is not available. Almost half of videos that stream on Comcast's mobile service play at 480p today, according to the company.

"We're setting personal hotspotting at 3G speeds for all Unlimited customers, which will allow customers to continue to do numerous things they enjoy doing online".

Want faster speeds when using a personal hotspot? At this speed, you'll conserve data so that it takes longer to reach the 20 GB threshold but you'll still be able to do numerous online activities you enjoy.
