Croatia skipper wins World Cup Golden Ball

Croatia midfielder Luka Modric has picked the Golden Ball (most valuable player) Award of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

Belgium's Eden Hazard was awarded the Silver Ball as runner-up and France's Antoine Griezmann was given the Bronze Ball.

The Golden Ball award is presented to the best player of the FIFA World Cup with Modric winning the vote by representatives of the media after a shortlist of players was drawn up by the FIFA technical committee.

Other award winners included England's Harry Kane (Golden Boot with 6 goals), Kylian Mbappé (Best Young Player), and the Spanish national team (Fair Play Award).

Modric scored a goal each in Croatia's opening two games against Nigeria and Argentina. We played well in the first 20 minutes, we controlled the game.

Croatia's inspirational captain Modric fell short of delivering the coveted World Cup title, in what would have been a fairytale story but received the Golden Ball for being the player of the tournament.

He scored twice against Tunisia in England's first match in Russian Federation and then bagged a hat trick in a 6-1 romp against Panama.

He failed to add to his tally in England's next three games - the 2-0 quarterfinal win over Sweden, the 2-1 semifinal loss to Croatia nor the 2-0 third-place play-off defeat by Belgium.

Antoine Griezmann and Romelu Lukaku with four and three goals came second and third respectively.
