Edwin van der Sar hails Daley Blind as Ajax move draws closer

"*Tears in my eyes*" Manchester United fans explode as club complete £14m deal for defender

Defender Daley Blind is leaving Manchester United and returning to his boyhood club Ajax in a transfer of historic proportions.

Ajax general manager Edwin van der Sar has branded Daley Blind "a fantastic player" as the Dutch giants reportedly close on a deal for the Manchester United midfielder.

De Telegraaf is reporting that Ajax will pay an initial €16 million to bring Blind back to the club but that fee could rise to €21 million. However, he didn't fit into Jose Mourinho's plans.

Blind wasn't the only missing first-team member from United's squad as Alexis Sanchez was also left out. The very next season, Van Gaal shifted him back into a defensive position at the back.

But even though they shared matching smiles, their styles for the day couldn't have been more different. The couple was reportedly disappointed when he said he couldn't attend due to heart surgery.

Blind leaves United with FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League winners' medals in his collection, while Old Trafford chiefs will be pleased to be United a profit on the player they signed for a £13.8m four years ago. He will take on a much bigger role at Ajax.

Having appeared 60 times in the Premier League before Mourinho's appointment, Blind has played only 30 times since the former Chelsea boss arrived.

He only managed a handful of starts last season - just three since November - and didn't travel with the squad to the United States for their pre-season tour with Ajax working hard on completing a deal.
