Federer's longest streak of sets won at Wimbledon was 34 between the third round in 2005 to the 2006 final.

The seven-time champion, who was controversially seeded at 25 following her lengthy absence as a new mother, claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win in 66 minutes on Centre Court.

"I think (Makarova) played above her level and really raised it and got a little lucky and played well when she needed to".

Madison Keys has become the latest top-10 seeded woman to lose at Wimbledon after her comeback fell short.

The American fought back from a set and two breaks down only to falter near the end as she lost to Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 in the third round.

The 36-year-old, whose winning run encompasses her Wimbledon titles in 2015 and 2016, missed the grass-court Grand Slam last year while she prepared to give birth to daughter Alexis Olympia in September.

Raonic reached the third round for a sixth straight year, having lost to eventual champion Federer in last year's quarterfinals.

Croatian world number 55 Donna Vekic followed up her shock success against fourth seed Sloane Stephens with a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Sweden's Rebecca Peterson.
