Intelligence community, political experts criticize president’s comments at summit with Putin

Putin said the date of his next meeting with Trump had not yet been decided but they could meet at an event in Asia or at the G20 in Argentina.

The pair had held lengthy talks before - on the sidelines of world leader meetings in Germany and Vietnam past year - but this was their first official summit and was being watched closely, especially following the announcement Friday of new indictments against 12 Russian intelligence officers accused of hacking Democratic emails to help Trump's campaign.

As if on cue, the Department of Justice on Monday afternoon, a few hours after the Trump-Putin press conference, announced that a Russian national was arrested on Sunday and charged with acting as a Russian agent in the United States and attempting to infiltrate organizations with influence over American politics.

"I think that American court now believes that it was done with the infringement of the American legislation, but that's none of my business". Putin said. "This is utterly ridiculous". Standing alongside the Kremlin boss at a joint news conference, Trump acknowledged that his intelligence chiefs believe Russian Federation hacked and leaked Democrats' emails containing politically damaging information about his rival Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Trump's meeting with Putin in Helsinki was his first time sharing the worldwide stage with a man he has described as an important United States competitor - but whom he has also praised a strong, effective leader.

Trump added that "creating safety for Israel is something both Putin and I would like to see very much". On Capitol Hill, top Republican leaders said they were open to slapping fresh sanctions on Russian Federation, but they showed no sign of acting any time soon. Instead, he directed his ire at Democrats and US officials, calling special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian Federation a "disaster".

He told reporters at a joint news conference with Putin that, although he supported U.S. intelligence analysts, Putin was "extremely strong" in denying any interference.

Asked whether he had wanted Trump to win the 2016 election and had instructed officials to help him, Putin said: "Yes I did", although he denied any interference, saying the allegations were "complete nonsense". He later noted that he didn't "see any reason why it would be" Russian Federation doing the hacking, noting that "President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today". "However, I also recognize that in order to build a brighter future, we can not exclusively focus on the past - as the world's two largest nuclear powers, we must get along". The comments received strong criticism across the media world and even by some Republican members of Congress.

Kawhi Leonard Rumors: This Team In ‘Driver’s Seat’ To Land Spurs Star
The first - his short and long-term injury status - could be put to rest with his potential USA Basketball camp participation. Additionally, Leonard would be ineligible for a supermax contract if he signs with a new team as a free agent next summer.

Former CIA Director John Brennan denounced Trump's performance as "treasonous", and Republican US Senator John McCain called the meeting with Putin a "tragic mistake", although some other Republicans were more cautious.

The president's critics pointed to Trump's refusal to publicly criticise Putin, who again denied that the "Russian state" interfered in the USA election and seemed puzzled by why the question kept coming up.

Well before Putin and Trump sat down at the Presidential Palace on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, Kremlin allies were celebrating the simple fact that the summit was taking place.

But this is also a Republican Party for whom anti-communism was once an essential ingredient in the glue that bound together an otherwise disparate coalition, and for which skepticism of Russian Federation and particularly of Putin has remained extremely strong. "Please get this rubbish out of your heads", the Russian leader said.

Ruben Gallego also weighed in, saying in a statement, "President Trump's meeting today with Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation was an appalling display of self-serving posturing by both men".

The two leaders appeared relaxed at the news conference, smiling on occasion, in contrast to their sombre demeanour at the start of the day.

Yet the matter of NATO canceling its major military exercises in Eastern Europe, the way Trump did in a gesture of goodwill to North Korea in June, was never brought up at the summit, Putin said. "We met to try and find a way to improve our relationship", he said. Even its choreography allowed Putin to claim a victory, down to the auto that whisked him through Helsinki's shuttered streets. The paper reported that as a result of the discussions between the two leaders many things had changed for the better. Back in Washington, both Democrats and Republicans slammed Trump's rhetoric.

When Trump spoke of the "foolishness and stupidity" of the U.S. foreign policy establishment that contributed to this era of animosity in U.S. -Russia relations, what might he have had in mind?
