Iranian general blames drought on Israeli ‘cloud theft’

"The changing climate in Iran is suspect", Jalali said, according to the Times of Israel. "Iran's climate change is suspect", he said.

Iran's own meteorological service struck a skeptical note, however.

He told the conference that Israel and another country in the region are working together to make sure that clouds that enter Iranian airspace are not able to release raindrops. "Moreover, we are faced with the cases of cloud theft and snow theft", Jalali said, according to a translation reported by Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency of comments featured by the Iranian Students' News Agency.

Jalali accused another unnamed neighboring country of cooperating secretly with Israel in this action.

He said officials would consider whether to ban boats from going to sea during strong winds. Two other separate boat capsizes were reported in the same area Thursday evening.

"On top of that, we are facing the issue of cloud and snow theft", Jalali added, citing a survey showing that above 2,200 metres all mountainous areas between Afghanistan and the Mediterranean are covered in snow, except Iran.

However, the meteorological service's head, Ahad Vazife contradicted the general's claims, saying, "General Jalali probably has documents of which I am not aware, but on the basis of meteorological knowledge, it is not possible for a country to steal snow or clouds".

He added that a country can not steal clouds because if it were possible, the United States would steal clouds from other countries and would no longer have a water shortage. The conspiracy theory was previously voiced by former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who said during a 2012 speech that Iran's growing drought was "partly unintentional due to industry and partly intentional, as a result of the enemy destroying the clouds moving towards our country and this is a war that Iran is going to overcome". He claimed these countries had affected the climate with their technologies.

The Iranian people "are victims of a cruel and tyrannical regime that denies them vital water", Netanyahu says in the video shared via social media. He added that Iranian research centers can "confirm" the claim.
