Islamabad HC rejects Nawaz Sharif, Maryam's bail request

Meanwhile, the Accountability Court hearing the corruption cases against the former premier is waiting for directions from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) where Nawaz has challenged his conviction as well as sought a transfer of the cases to another Judge.

Last week, the accountability court had rejected the Sharif family's petition to transfer the Al-Azizia corruption reference to another judge.

Also, Safdar was given a one-year sentence without any fine.

During today's hearing, Nawaz's lawyer Khawaja Haris was due to cross-examine prosecution witness Wajid Zia, however, the primary defence counsel failed to appear in court.

Haris also informed the court that despite multiple attempts made over the last two days, access to the former premier was not granted and claimed that the objective of the trial being conducted within jail premises is to ensure that no one can see or hear Nawaz before elections.

Earlier, on July 17, the IHC had issued notices to the National Accountability Bureau on all the pleas and adjourned the hearing till the last week of July. The counsel then said that his client had also submitted a petition in the IHC to transfer the case to another court.

Haris responded that since the IHC bench had chose to seek assistance from NAB, the court could not pass an order as no one from the prosecution was present inside the court room. NAB prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi said that there is no stay order on moving forth with the trial and it would be appropriate that the same judge who heard the entire case also takes the remaining references.

The court awarded 11 years to the former PM, eight to his daughter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, and one year to his son-in-law, Capt (retd) Safdar.

The caretaker federal cabinet cancelled the decision to conduct corruption proceedings against Sharif family inside Adiala jail. Maryam Sharif was sentenced to seven years in prison along with a 2 million pounds (USD 2.6 million) fine.

The ex-premier, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Safdar are now in jail after the accountability court in Islamabad on July 6 sentenced Nawaz and Maryam in absentia to 10 years and seven years respectively with a $8 million and $2 million fine respectively on corruption charges.

He further said that evidence and charges in all cases are nearly similar.

Nawaz and his sons, Hussain and Hasan, are accused in all three references whereas Maryam and Safdar were accused in the Avenfield reference only.
