Justin Trudeau Responds To Allegation He Groped A Journalist 18 Years Ago

After his meeting with Ford, Trudeau emerged to tell media that he "spent a little time explaining" to the new premier how the asylum process works and Canada's worldwide obligations to the new premier.

The Canadian Prime Minister has faced media scrutiny in recent weeks about what happened at a charity fundraiser in Creston, British Columbia almost 20 years ago. "I do not feel that I acted inappropriately in any way".

"I do not feel that I acted inappropriately in any way, but I respect the fact that someone else might have experienced that differently", Trudeau said, describing how he has been "reflecting very carefully" on the interaction over the past few weeks.

Justin Trudeau at the second annual Kokanee Summit in Creston, B.C., on August 6, 2000.

The allegations by a young reporter were contained in an 18-year-old editorial titled "Open eyes" in the Creston Valley Advance in British Columbia took Trudeau for inappropriately "handling" their reporter while she was on assignment.

The National Post spoke with both the then publisher and then editor of the small newspaper as part of its investigation into the alleged incident, published last month. "This reporter was of a high character in my opinion and was professional in the way she conducted herself, and there's no question in my mind that what was alluded to, written about in that editorial, did happen".

"I've been reflecting on the actual interaction and if I apologized later, then it would be because I sensed that she was not entirely comfortable with the interaction that we had", Trudeau told reporters Thursday. We don't feel that would be appropriate at all.

Trudeau, whose globally lauded feminist credentials have been called into question, said he would not "presume to speak" for the woman at the heart of the story.

"I've been reflecting very carefully on what I remember from that incident nearly 20 years ago", he told reporters.

In 2014, as Liberal Party leader, Trudeau booted two MPs from caucus before the completion of independent investigations probing allegations of sexual harassment. He instead connected the incident to the broader societal conversations struck by the #MeToo movement in the past year.

At the time of the original complaint Trudeau had not yet become involved in politics but was widely known to Canadians as the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.

Trudeau also stressed that "it's not just one side that matters" in such cases and that society should reflect on this issue.

He said it is possible the person who made the allegation perceived the interaction differently.
