Volcanic lava'bomb injures 23 people on tour boat in Hawaii

At least 12 people were injured after a "lava bomb" reportedly punctured the roof of a lava tour boat, causing a large hole, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.

Friday's crater explosion sparked a slow-moving flood of lava that destroyed hundreds of homes at Kapoho, on the Big Island.

He says he then navigated his vessel to about 250 yards from the lava.

The boat managed to return to Wailoa Harbor in Hilo around 7 a.m. Three passengers were in stable condition.

The state's Department of Land and Natural Resources said one passenger broke a leg and others had been burned after the incident on Tuesday (NZT).

"As we were exiting the zone, all of a sudden everything around us exploded", Turpin told The Associated Press. "I mean this was a group of people that never met before, and they were brought together", he said.

The others in the tour group quickly pulled together helped one another, Turpin said.

Officials have warned of the dangers of toxic fumes, created when molten rock hits the sea and forms hazardous clouds containing hydrochloric acid and glass particles. The Coast Guard said tour vessels have operated in the area going back at least 20 years. For mariners without prior limited entry approval, the safety zone encompasses all waters extending 300 meters (984 feet) in all directions around the entry of the lava flow into the ocean, USCG stated in May.

The observatory said at the time that the tiny island was likely part of the flow from fissure no. 8 that's entering the ocean, and possibly developed as a "submarine tumulus", which built up underwater and then emerged above sea level. Four of the injured were transported by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center, the local outlet reported.
