President Trump said Monday that he spoke to Mexican President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and believed they would have a "very good" relationship.

The victory was a vindication for Lopez Obrador, who was written off by many critics after narrowly failing to capture the presidency at his first bid in 2006. Stocks also slipped, along with the country's dollar-denominated notes.

Younger Mexicans, many of whom have grown up surrounded by rampant corruption and drug violence, were expected to have played a key role in choosing the country's direction. The peso's drop in the second quarter was the biggest since 2014.

The President of the United States took to Twitter to congratulate Lopez Obrador with the election victory, saying that he was looking "very much forward to working with him". Among his proposals are a halt to a $13 billion airport project, the rollback of a historic opening of the energy industry and an expansive fiscal program.

Lopez Obrador will formally take power on December 1. "The corrupt regime is coming to its end", Lopez Obrador, a 64-year-old commonly known as AMLO, said at his final campaign event Wednesday.

Lopez Obrador has been compared to Trump for his populist, nationalist rhetoric and sometimes touchy personality - as well as his past skepticism about NAFTA.

I will govern honestly and justly, I will not fail you. Lopez Obrador told voters that he is the person for the job.

"If Mr. Donald Trump, I say it with all due respect, does that and militarizes the border, we, in the 3,185 kilometers of border that we have in the United States we are going to make a manifestation and a human chain dressed in white asking peace and progress."
This may mean that any future negotiations are unlikely to shift the focus.

"We will search for a relationship with the USA government based on friendship and development, always inculcated with mutual respect and in defense of our compatriots, immigrants who live and work in that country", he said. In a speech to the huge crowd in the Zocalo, he struck a moderate tone, stressing a need to act respectfully, to maintain economic and financial stability.
