Maradona Apologises To FIFA Over Referee’s Outburst

A Colombia fan can't bare to watch as his team bows out of the World Cup

FIFA have condemned Diego Maradona after his outrageous rant in which he blamed football's governing body for handing England a win over Colombia in the World Cup round of 16.

In a rant over the quality of refereeing, particularly the performance of match official Mark Geiger, 1986 World Cup victor Maradona criticized Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino, and the organization's head of refereeing Pierluigi Collina. "I apologise to all the Colombian people, but they must know the players are not to blame".

'It also considers the additional comments and insinuations made as being entirely inappropriate and completely unfounded'.

He took to Instagram on Thursday to make amends and admitted that he had said some "unacceptable things" in the excitement of rooting for Colombia, in whose shirt he was pictured before the match.

"As the captain of legends, I have to tell (Fifa president) Infantino this can not be left like this".

"Here's a gentleman who decides, a referee who, if you Google him, shouldn't be given a match of this magnitude..."

Maradona, who captained Argentina to victory at the 1986 World Cup, said he was surprised Geiger had been chosen for the match.

"I told (FIFA President) Gianni Infantino that if I worked for FIFA I would change everything".

Dollar takes a breather as trade concerns linger
Currently, the currency pair is trading at 6.6330 - up 0.24 percent on the day, but well below the high of 6.6390 seen on Friday. The benchmark CSI300 Index ended the day down 1.3 percent, and the Shanghai Composite Index was off 0.94 percent.

"I have absolute respect for the work - which is not easy - that the institution and the referees do", he added.

"FIFA is extremely sorry to read such declarations from a player who has written the history of our game", a statement read.

"It was clear that in the 50-50 calls, he always sided with England and this is a disgrace in the round of 16", said Falcao.

That's Diego Maradona there - yes, *that* Diego Maradona - calling theft and skullduggery without the merest hint of irony.

The ever-controversial former World Cup victor also pointed the finger at Pierluigi Collina, head of FIFA's referee committee, for allowing Geiger's designation.

No surprise either to see that Diego Maradona went full on in his support of even another country against England.

Viewership of England's victory over Colombia on Tuesday peaked at 24.2 million during the penalty shootout, which was roughly 81 percent of the people watching TV in the United Kingdom, according to the Telegraph.
