John Obi Mikel has revealed he was told that his father had been kidnapped just hours before last Tuesday's World Cup match between Nigeria and Argentina.

Obi, a former Chelsea player, told KweseESPN that he did not tell anyone in the team or his coach Gernot Rohr about the kidnapping.

Nigera lost the match to Argentina 2-1 at the Saint Petersburg stadium and went out of the World Cup.

The Minister for Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung has described Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi as a courageous player who did not allow the news of his father's kidnap dissuade him from playing against Argentina.

It is the second time Mikel's father has been abducted. "As much as I wanted to discuss it with the coach, I could not".

It was a battle uphill as she fought to deuce using some trick shots to beat Makarova with the forehand on the advantage point. With so much effort to get the biggest win of the season, she will go into Friday facing Lucie Safarova in the third round.

The police spokesperson said the Nigerian skipper had to pay a ransom of 10 million naira ($27,739) to secure the release of his father. According to Nigerian Police, they were both rescued on Monday near the city of Udi in Enugu State after a gun duel.

Mikel ended up flying out of Russian Federation and arranged a cash transfer to the thugs immediately after Nigeria's World Cup campaign ended.

"I would like to thank the police authorities involved in ensuring the safe return of my father after the ordeal this week".

Superintendent Ebere Amaraizu, of Enugu State Police Command, said: "The abductors started calling to demand a ransom of N10 million before police operatives acted on intelligence information and swooped on them".

In a post on his Twitter handle on Tuesday, Omokri wrote: "What @mikel_john_obi did in playing during the Nigeria V Argentina match despite the kidnap of his father was courageous and deserves commendation". I thank the police authorities for their rescue efforts and the support I've received from friends and family members. He is now recuperating with family. No pressure. I have full confidence in him to make the best decision for himself, his family and his country. He was kidnapped in 2011 in central Nigeria and later freed, although authorities declined to comment on how he was released.
