This "couch-to-gate" biometrics technology will use a network of cameras to track passengers as they move through the terminal, and a future version of the process will use biometrics to help customers check in remotely via a dedicated app.

During the first phase of testing, passengers will be able to use the technology to check-in, drop off bags, access the lounge, and board the flight.

The system will be available to passengers on select worldwide flights on a voluntary basis, and Qantas has proposed to expand it to mobile check-in and automated border processing in the future.

Australia's current system, SmartGate, is already using face scanning technology to electronically analyze passports of those traveling into and out of the country and Canberra airport are now trialing facial recognition software for global travelers.

Further, passengers would have to consent to participate in the trial, with "adheres to the strictest privacy standards and complies with all relevant legislation".

A Sydney Airport spokeswoman said the trial at this stage was about data collection and matching and the manual system would run alongside the new system so the latter could be validated.

Tech: 'Cataclysmic' collision shaped Uranus' evolution
An global team of experts has tried to understand what implications a massive object hitting Uranus in the past would have had. This trapped internal heat could partly explain why the outer atmosphere of Uranus is so cold - at negative 216 degreeCelsius.

"There is an increasing need for airlines and airports to offer faster and more convenient airport experiences and we're excited to see what results the trial produces", Qantas Chief Customer Officer Vanessa Hudson said in a statement.

A number of airports globally have been investigating facial recognition as a way of boosting throughput and making life easier for passengers.

The PDE is based on the International Air Transport Association's One Identity concept.

"We're very excited that select Qantas passengers now have the chance to experience this highly sophisticated technology as part of this landmark trial", said Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert.

Sydney Airport revealed the system - which it has dubbed the "fast passenger processing project" - in May.
