Open Championship 2018: Eddie Pepperell credits hangover for great final round

"I was a little hungover, I won't lie", he began when speaking to the media after entering a round of 67.

England's Eddie Pepperell walks over the bridge onto the 18th during the final round. "I had too much to drink last night. So, you know, it's a amusing game".

Pepperell's fine round put him temporarily in contention as the leaders with later tee-off times faced increasing winds.

Pepperell shot a 4-under 67 on his final round, surging to close to the top of the leaderboard. "I like to socialise in the evenings really, if I can, and it certainly takes some of the pressure and the sting away from competitive golf at this level because it's stressful". Whether I shot 69 or 73 today, it wouldn't have been heartbreaking.

Eddie Pepperell is never afraid to speak his mind in a post-round interview.

I’m not a robot, says McIlroy after starting Open bid
After a bogey on 12, he was eyeing a long eagle putt on 14 - and of course he drained it. "That's my game plan this week". I play my best golf. "Tiger being back in the mix, everything, there were a lot of big names up there".

That wasn't the only entertaining quote from the 27-year-old, however.

"Listen, I mean I wouldn't always have a drink the night before".

On his birdie putt at the last: "Desperately trying to hole it but desperately thinking, well, I could easily wipe this three foot past, and the last thing I want to do is leave myself a three-footer at Carnoustie in front of 10,000 people". "Sometimes I'd have a few drinks", he added. "I've played Carnoustie heaps of times".

"I was very, very fortunate that I got far enough down there where I had a full wedge into the green". I think it depends on how you feel.

'I hadn't felt the energy of the crowd for a while in the Open and so this was a real positive for me. I was trying to play for the grass to wrap the shaft around there and hit it left, and I was just trying to hold the face open as much as I possibly could.
