Another boat also overturned off Phuket on Thursday. One Chinese male passenger has been confirmed dead, and at least 12 people hospitalized.

Police previously said 90 people had been rescued from the boat and just seven were missing. He would not be drawn on whether the rescuers could see the people who had not been pulled to safety.

They said they were providing food, shelter and water to the people, and if the weather did not clear, larger boats belonging to the navy would be sent to retrieve them.

Footage shared on Facebook showed officials at a pier gathering information as the rescue operation unfolded in darkness behind them.

One of those rescued was said to have been seriously injured, the Bangkok Post reported.

It added that the Chinese consulate in southern Thailand already had staffers on the scene helping its citizens.

Thailand is in the midst of its monsoon season which begins in May and usually ends in October.

Road and boat accidents involving tourists are common in Thailand, where safety standards are sometimes well below global norms. Many tour operators have complained about lax enforcement when it comes to basic safety measures, including seatbelts in cars and lifejackets on boats.

A provincial governor says 49 people are missing from a boat carrying mostly Chinese tourists that overturned in rough seas off southern Thailand. Officials blamed the accident on overcrowding and reckless piloting.

Chinese tourists make up the biggest foreign visitors to Thailand, with numbers surging in recent years due to the increasing popularity of Thailand's islands and cosmopolitan.
