Samsung announces its first 8GB DDR5 RAM for mobile devices

Samsung designed the latest LPDDR5 memory chips with 5G and AI applications in mind

Samsung said that its prototype 8 GB (not 8 Gbit) LPDDR5 DRAM package made up of eight such 8 Gbit (not GB) chips has been tested and it didn't catch fire. Most, if not all, mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and Ultrabooks, employ some sort of low-power DDR (LPDDR) memory. Firstly, it has a maximum data rate of up to 6400Mbps at 1.1V, which Samsung claims to be about 1.5 times faster than the current LPDDR4X memory standard. To put it in practical terms, it would be able to transfer 14 Full HD videos, each 3.7 GB in size, in just a second.

That's because the company has announced it has developed 8GB RAM chips for use in phones, so they're likely going to get used in a Samsung handset before too long and the Galaxy S10 seems an obvious candidate, as they're sure to debut in a flagship and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is probably launching too soon.

While the announcement comes with the usual promises of "improved performance" and "reduced power consumption", there is some technical basis for those. When in "active mode", the new LPDDR5 DRAM will automatically lower its voltage in accordance to different application's operating speed in order to save battery life.

Liverpool Close In On Record-Breaking Transfer Signing
The Reds will be looking to try and challenge for the Premier League title next season after their fourth-placed finish last term. The report claims that Liverpool have made a bid of £62m, with £53m being offered up front and the rest being made up in add-ons.

Samsung's goal is to provide a high-speed solution for future 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered mobile devices with its 10nm-class LPDDR5 DRAM chips. It has been configured to avoid overwriting cells with "0" values. While Samsung didn't spell out when LPDDR5 chips would be ready to hit the market, production will coincide with demand from global customers. It will be UHD-compatible for mobile devices worldwide as well.

In addition, the new chip will offer a "deep sleep mode", which cuts the power usage to approximately half the "idle mode" of the current DRAM. Enter your email to be subscribed to our newsletter.
