Spotify Users Request Refunds After Over-The-Top Drake Promotion

Drake’s ‘Degrassi’ Reunion

His 25-track double album Scorpion was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America upon its release on June 29, thanks to the success of the chart-topping singles "God's Plan" and "Nice for What".

Despite this, more Drake users streamed the album on Apple Music than on Spotify, showing that all that advertising was largely unnecessary, and perhaps harmful to the service.

However, Spotify's pushing of Drake to its users hasn't gone down well with some people - with many noticing that the streaming platform had put different pictures of Drake on a number of its playlists, including ones which didn't feature any of his music (such as "Best of British"). Spotify of course wanted everyone to know as well and when the album finally dropped it chose to take advantage and plaster Drake ads everywhere it could on it's app and it seems now that users didn't take too kind to that. Spotify placed Drake prominently on its playlists, effectively allowing the artist to "take over" the music service over the weekend.

Reports have come in that Spotify users are now looking for refunds for the excessive Scorpion and Drake promotion that occured throughout their app. A representative for Spotify stated to Billboard this type of promotion was a first for the company. Users could argue that a truly ad-free service would remove these front page prompts, and have independently-curated playlists only.

Complaints made it to Reddit where a user named Schwagschwag stated he received a refund, which others also claimed they have received.
