Rangers boss Steven Gerrard swooped to sign Flanagan following his release from Liverpool and the defender lined up against Shkupi at Ibrox on Thursday night for the first leg of the Gers' Europa League first qualifying round tie.

He added: "Am I confident I can break into the side?"

"It's the same for all the young boys, we come in every day, show him what we can do and hopefully get our names on the team-sheet as soon as possible".

"Having seen them and what they're about, they gave us one or two minor scares but I'm very confident we can go away and score goals against them", said the 38-year-old. We take 2-0 but I'm slightly disappointed we didn't win it more comfortably.

"It's about taking it day by day, that's the manager's message to everyone and me personally - just do what I can every day to show what I'm capable of".

Stoke City Want Sheyi Ojo From Liverpool In Shaqiri Transfer Deal
Xherdan Shaqiri will complete a medical at Melwood on Friday as the Switzerland attacker nears a £13.5 million move to Liverpool from Stoke City .

Goals from winger Jamie Murphy and skipper James Tavernier helped Rangers beat the visiting minnows at the Ibrox Stadium but Gerrard, a former England and Liverpool captain, was underwhelmed that his team did not finish off the tie.

Scotland Under-21 global Middleton joined Rangers from English Championship club Norwich City in January but has had to wait until the summer arrival of Gerrard to make his first-team bow.

The biggest positive to probably take from the game were the thoughts of Gerrard himself as whilst he told the Official Site that he saw "plenty of positives" he was also quick to warn the players that he expected more from them in the future and the game proved they certainly had plenty more hard work left this pre-season before the Premiership campaign kicks off.

"It's just a case of trying to take your opportunity when it is given to you".

"It's our first competitive game. He has a part to play and it is important now he enjoys tonight and then gets himself ready for the next game". It was a really good result for the team, although obviously it wasn't the ideal performance. We have to make sure we perform when we go out there.
