UK's Theresa May Says Trump Told Her to Sue the EU over Brexit

"Sue the European Union", she told BBC television.

Trump said in an interview published in Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper on Friday that May had not taken his advice on Brexit, which was just one of many comments made by the president about her exit plans. "So I want us to be able to sit down to negotiate the best deal for Britain".

Ms May and Mr Trump both spoke of the importance of the "special relationship" between their two countries, something that Brexit supporters hope will reap benefits when Britain leaves the European Union, allowing it to forge closer trade ties with the world's biggest economy.

Mr Trump warned in an interview with The Sun that staying tied to Brussels could scupper hopes of a trade deal with the USA - but later told reporters such a pact would "absolutely be possible".

The president is spending a second day at his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland before heading to Helsinki later on Sunday ahead of his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Sue the EU. Not go into negotiations - sue them".

Mrs May clearly spent a good part of the working session with Mr Trump on Friday morning explaining to him that her plan would have no such effect, and the President responded that he was reassured. Asked to rate U.S. -U.K. relations, Trump gave them the "highest level of special".

A small group of pro-Trump supporters waved the USA flag alongside the Union Jack, chanting "We want Trump" and "Trump for 2020".

Prime Minister Theresa May laughed off the US President's legal action suggestion, but added: "interestingly, what the president also said at the press conference was "don't walk away".

Trump later backtracked on his comments and later promised a "great" USA trade deal.

Steve Bannon, Trump's former adviser, was quoted by the Daily Telegraph newspaper on Sunday as saying that it was now time for Johnson to challenge May for her job.

Baker, who was a junior minister under Davis, claimed the Brexit Department was little more than a "Potemkin structure to [distract from] what the Cabinet Office Europe unit was doing for the Prime Minister". Along with Mr Johnson, the man who had been leading the Brexit negotiations, David Davis, also quit in protest.

Mrs May urged Brexiteers in her own party to "keep their eye on the prize" of Brexit - and said her plan was the only workable way to deliver it.

"I am yet to see a workable alternative future trading arrangement that would deliver on our commitments to Northern Ireland, preserve the constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom and deliver on the result of the referendum", she wrote.

Her appeal didn't convince prominent Conservative lawmaker Jacob Rees-Mogg, who accused May of only half-heartedly supporting Brexit.
