U.S. ambassador tries to lower expectation for Trump-Putin meeting

Speaking at a rally in Great Falls, Montana, US President Donald Trump said he expected to have a good meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin later this month and suggested that a "good relationship" might come out of it, Sputnik News reported. It will be the first formal summit between the two leaders, although they've met twice before.

Huntsman said Trump would address the election interference in his conversations with Putin, along with a range of other national security issues, including Russia's annexation of Crimea and its efforts in Syria.

While Trump wants to improve relations, "the ball is in Russia's court and the administration will continue to hold Russian Federation accountable for its malign activities", he added. But it will also take place under the cloud of special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe into potential links between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin during the 2016 vote.

"Everyone in our alliance has the same goal, and that is a strong deterrent; an alliance that is unified that can face any threats that any one of our 29 members might face", she said, listing "Russia and the malign activities of Russian Federation, the efforts of Russian Federation to divide our Democratic nations" and INF treaty violations as among those threats. But the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit is likely to be dominated by Trump's insistence that member nations step up and pay more for their joint defense.

President Donald Trump, a political impresario and disrupter, is never happier than when holding the world in thrall.

"We're entering [the talks with Russia] with our eyes wide open, but peace is always worth the effort", he added.

Mrs. Hutchison and Mr. Huntsman briefed reports on the president's upcoming trip to Europe, which will also include a visit to the United Kingdom.

"You can't solve problems if you're not talking about them", Huntsman said.

Mr. Huntsman said the president believes an improved relationship with Russian Federation is in both countries' interest and in the interest of world peace.
