By raising it up in the air, it can then direct your driver's attention towards you - acting like a makeshift flare gun - and give them more of an idea of what to look out for.

Most people use Uber as situations arise but sometimes, you know well in advance when you'll need transportation (if you have an early flight or an important meeting, for example).

Another new update is Pickup Messages, which makes it easy for riders to let their driver know how to spot them or give a quick update on their status.

The company has also added scheduled pickups.

Riders can send messages to their driver within the app, and send ready-to-go messages like "be right there" with one tap. These messages are read out loud to drivers and they can reply with pre-populated smart messages in a tap.

Uber's in-app messaging feature has also been tweaked.

Uber is looking at adding automatic translation to the feature so that global drivers can easily communicate with their riders, no matter what language they speak.
