US, North Korea generals meet to discuss return of Korean War remains

There was no immediate word from the US side, but South Korean media said that the USA team was led by Air Force Maj.

A group of 13 North Korean restaurant staff who moved to the South in 2016 were forced to defect by South Korean intelligence, their manager says.

North Korea and the United States conducted joint operations to recover the remains of US soldiers from 1996 to 2005 but stopped when their relations soured as Pyongyang accelerated its nuclear program.

Pompeo initially said the two sides had agreed to hold talks on USA remains on Thursday but no North Korean representatives showed up at the border. The meeting has been rescheduled for Sunday.

Pompeo said that working-level meetings would continue on Monday to discuss the next steps, including the actual transfer of the service members' remains from North Korea.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing South Korean government and USA military sources, said the negotiations had begun at 0100 GMT at the border village of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas.

Kim also said he "deeply" appreciates Trump's "energetic and extraordinary efforts" to improve relations and sign a joint statement calling for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. He said that the discussions were "productive and cooperative and resulted in firm commitments" from North Korean officials on the return of the remains.

About 200 sets of remains are expected to be handed over to the UNC at the inter-Korean border.

The U.S. government estimates that the North Korean government has about 80,000 to 120,000 political prisoners in detention.

Some 21 nations fought alongside the South Korean military during the three-year conflict as part of UN multinational forces.

The article said the Trump administration should ignore such messages in order to "build the new future of peace and prosperity breaking with the 70-year past dominated by distrust and confrontation".

United Nations sanctions that were toughened after nuclear and missile tests could take a huge economic toll if they continue, foreign experts said.

Pressed on criticism that he elevated a "ruthless dictator" on the global stage by agreeing to meet with him, he acknowledged that Kim was "ruthless, but so are others".

"We will be ready", she said. "I mean plenty of the people that I deal with are pretty ruthless people", he noted.

In the course of negotiations between the two nations, the USA has seen North Korea stop testing ballistic missiles as it had been aggressively doing and return three US prisoners that had been held captive in North Korea.

United States and South Korean officials say they are ready to help North Korea revive its economy if it gives up its nuclear programme.
