At least 7 killed in head-on bus crash in New Mexico

At least four people have died and several are seriously injured after a Greyhound bus carrying nearly 50 people and a semi-truck crashed head-on.

Three of the six patients taken to UNMH were listed in critical condition and the condition of the others was not released, said spokeswoman Cindy Foster.

The truck driver also sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, according to police.

The New Mexico State police said the truck crossed the center line after a tire blowout, resulting in the crash.

The bus was traveling from Albuquerque to Phoenix in the state of Arizona with 47 passengers on board.

State Police provided few immediate details about the incident on Interstate 40 near Thoreau, about 100 miles west-northwest of Albuquerque, including the number of dead and injured. Several people could be seen lying on the ground next to the bus.

"It was terrible, there was people trying to climb out of the windows of the bus. bystanders trying to help people getting ladders out of their truck to get to windows of Greyhound bus to assist", a witness told KRQE. It happened along Interstate 40 in New Mexico, near the Arizona border. "Officers and EMS are still working this scene actively".

Video from the scene showing the aftermath shows the trailer of the truck overturned, the crumpled bus and debris across the floor. Traffic was backed up along the interstate near the town of Thoreau as westbound lanes were blocked. They said passengers are being transported to the hospital.
