Huge Explosion Near Italy's Bologna Airport Triggered By Road Accident

Fourteen people are seriously injured, La Repubblica reported, citing local police.

An explosion caused by an accident involving a truck carrying flammable liquid has injured 56 people and killed one, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

Italian media has reported that numerous injured were hit by debris and shattered glass following the explosion. The police blockaded the motorway in Bologna's Borgo Panigale area - where the blast occurred.

Speaking to television news channel Sky TG24, police officers said that the extremely high temperatures caused by the blast and fire - which took firefighters almost two hours to put out - caused the road to collapse.

He said that there were seven to eight minutes of what sounded like explosions causing the glass roof of the restaurant to collapse.

Many people had evacuated the area, due to the thick black smoke, but also while firefighters checked to see if buildings where windows had been blown out were safe to enter.

Authorities said the accident closed down a major interchange connecting highways linking northern Italy with the Adriatic coast, a popular destination as Italy heads into next week's peak summer holiday travel period.

Police said the explosion came after an accident at midday on a busy eight-lane highway near Bologna.

Italian media said a lorry carrying cars collided on a bridge with another tanker lorry containing inflammable materials.
