Five people have been stripped of their Australian citizenship for fighting alongside the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, with officials saying Thursday the country was a better place without them.

'We know there are dual citizens among Australians fighting with terrorists in the Middle East and yet officials have so far confirmed that only one has lost their citizenship under the operation of the law, ' Mr Dutton said in February.

Dutton did not identify the five.

The only person previously stripped of Australian citizenship under the anti-terror laws passed in 2015 is Khaled Sharrouf.

The five are all aged in their 20s and 30s. Intelligence agencies began investigating them past year, the ABC said.

"Our country is safer because these people aren't returning".

"Through their own actions, they've effectively renounced their Australian citizenship, and they can then default back to their country of birth or the country that they had citizenship of otherwise".

Sharrouf, the first Australian national stripped of his passport for Islamic State links, was also a Lebanese citizen.

The identities of the terrorists have not been confirmed, and they were among about 100 Australians who remain in the region after joining terror groups in Iraq and Syria.

Sharrouf was photographed holding up severed heads alongside friend and fellow ISIS recruit, former Sydney boxing champion Mohammed Elomar, and Sharrouf posted a picture of his son doing the same.

He was left with Lebanese citizenship after his Australian citizenship was cancelled in January previous year.

A rarely-used piece of national security legislation allows the minister to automatically strip citizenship from dual nationals who "act contrary to their allegiance to Australia" by engaging in terror-related acts.

He noted that some Australians who have gone overseas to fight with Islamic State have been killed on the battlefield.

The Islamic State group was declared a terrorist organization for these purposes since May 2016.

"It is opposed to Australia, its people and its democratic rights and privileges", Dutton said in a statement.
