Golden State Killer suspect is charged with 13th murder this time in Tulare County

Officials previously said prosecutors will seek the death penalty against 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo.

A man accused of a string of murders, rapes and burglaries in California as the so-called Golden State Killer has been charged with another murder.

"In my heart, I believe he's the one, and that my father was his first victim", Snelling's daughter, Elizabeth Hupp, told CBS on Monday.

"Based on the information detectives have uncovered, we have identified Joseph James DeAngelo as the sole suspect" in Snelling's murder, Salazar said.

"That's when I heard my dad yell and... the man with a ski mask pushed me to the ground, turned, and shot my dad twice as he was coming through the back door", Hupp said in the interview.

DeAngelo is suspected in dozens of burglaries and multiple attempted rapes in Visalia - but Snelling's slaying was the only crime authorities could attribute to him that had not passed the statute of limitations, said Tulare County district attorney Tim Ward.

While DeAngelo is not directly linked to Snelling's murder by DNA, police chief Jason Salazar said he can prove DeAngelo is also the Visalia Ransacker.

Snelling was shot and killed as he charged at a masked man who was trying to abduct his daughter from his home, according to the Visalia Times Delta.

Ward said "good old-fashioned, dedicated police work" played a bigger role than science and DNA in capturing DeAngelo. Among the nicknames, the serial killer was also dubbed the East Area Rapist.

Authorities said DeAngelo was working as a police officer in the city of Exeter from May 1973 to August 1976, the period in which the Ransacker cases were occurring in Visalia and at the time of the Snelling homicide. Shortly after that, investigators believe he moved to the Sacramento area, beginning a new crime wave as the East Area Rapist.

In June, DeAngelo was cleared of the 1978 murders of Rhonda Wicht and 4-year-old Donald in Simi Valley after the alleged killer's DNA did not match those collected from the crime scene.

DeAngelo is now being held in Sacramento County Main Jail and faces 12 counts of murder in Sacramento, Orange, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

The former police officer, Vietnam War veteran and auto mechanic was arrested in April after police tracked him down by matching his DNA with a genealogy website.
