Google Details Display Notch Guidelines for Developers and Manufacturers

Google discussed the new principles, which arrive as part of the Android P Developer Preview 5 (Beta 4), in a blog post published yesterday.

Given that three notches on a phone is more far-fetched than reality at this point, the framework in this blog post seems slightly unnecessary, except from the standpoint of Google wanting to spell out limits that just ensure a smooth app experience never mind the device being used.

You won't see a cutout on the left or right long edge of the device.

"To ensure consistency and app compatibility, we're working with our device manufacturer partners to mandate a few requirements".

Specifically, Google is limiting the number of notches - or "cutouts", as they're technically called - to two. We already know that Android P is expected to offer official operating system-level support for the display notch - also known as a cutout - as well. First of all, the notches (or cutouts as Google calls them) can not negatively affect any apps. How about two or more?

My Health Record to be revised for digital privacy
Mr Hunt said the government will continue to advocate to the public about the benefits of the digital health record system. Australians have until mid-October to decide whether they want to opt out from the Government's My Health Record database.

Google did say that on devices running Android 8.1 or earlier, users can decide to "extend a letterboxed fullscreen or landscape app into the cutout area". But it's always possible we see some insane designs with a lot of different notches from a manufacturer that doesn't have to follow those rules. "In this release we have also reviewed and set limit for the system icons".

In an effort to adopt the bezel-less design trend, smartphone makers have begun to push the display notch.

We've seen quite a few different Android-based smartphones with a notch design up to this point, and it stands to reason that we will more than likely see quite a few more in the future. That means no notch support on the side of the display.

Like it or not, notched phones are here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future.

Phones with notches are incredibly divisive, but since Apple launched the iPhone X complete with a little screen cutout, there have been endless copies from other handset manufacturers.
