It's Official, Sydney Is More Liveable Than Ever

Sorry Melbourne You’ve Lost The Title Of World’s Most Liveable City

Vienna, Austria has toppled Melbourne, Australia as the world's most liveable city. Relative stability across much of Europe improved Vienna's security scores to push it to the top.

Melbourne's unseating isn't the only noticeable shift after years of very little change among the highest ranks.

Japan, which alongside Osaka boasted Tokyo in the top ten (joint seventh), is the glaring exception to that rule with a nationwide average of 347 people per square kilometre but its cities are still famed for their transport networks and living standards. Japan's Osaka took third place.

Vienna's low crime rate, as well as a downgraded threat of militant attacks in western Europe, helped contribute to its overall win, recording a ideal score of 100 in the stability and safety of the city category.

Melbourne has sat in the top spot for the last seven years.

It is the first time a European metropolis has topped the annual chart compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit which identifies the best urban playgrounds to live and work in.

Osaka, Calgary and Sydney completed the top five in the survey, which the EIU says tends to favour medium-sized cities in wealthy countries, often with relatively low population densities.

The stories had the same pattern - flu-like symptoms that rapidly grew more serious, sometimes to the point of death. Within a week of being confined, doctors amputated his legs, then his arms in a desperate attempt to save his life.

Closer to home, Adelaide was ranked 10, while Perth dropped out of the top 10, and into 14th place, despite its liveability score remaining unchanged - a change in a city's ranking doesn't necessarily correspond to a change in that city's liveability, but rather its liveability compared to other cities in the survey.

"Although they have been subject to high-profile terrorist attacks in recent years, which have shaken stability and led to cumbersome security measures, both cities have shown resilience in the face of adversity", the report adds.

One year after overtaking Hong Kong in the rankings, Singapore slipped back behind its Asian rival to come in at 37 on the list. Kuala Lumpur, Kathmandu, Colombo and Dhaka's ranking fell due to various cultural and environment indicators.

Puerto Rico's San Juan - which was devastated by a hurricane a year ago - as well as Damascus and Caracas also saw steep drops over the same period.

Unsurprisingly Syria's war-torn capital Damascus continues to languish at the bottom of the list, with an overall score of 30.7.

On a larger scale, global livability has improved for the second year in a row, increasing from 74.8% last year to 75.7% in 2018.
