Manchester United superstar David de Gea is reportedly on the verge of signing a new lucrative deal with the Old Trafford club, cementing his place as the highest-paid goalkeeper in the Premier League.

De Gea, who was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Atletico Madrid for £18.9m in 2011, has won United's player-of-the-year award in four of the past five seasons.

Courtois' move from Chelsea to the Bernabeu last week has taken his most obvious destination out of the equation, boosting United's hopes of agreeing a new contract with De Gea.

His current deal is due to expire in June although the club have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

De Gea is reportedly happy with life in Manchester, and enjoys a good relationship with Jose Mourinho and goalkeeping coach Emilio Alvarez.

However, the Telegraph report insists the Frenchman is set to stay at Manchester United , but wants more backing. Barça's president said that the club would be prepared to make more signings, depending on who departs.

Do you think De Gea deserves a big-money contract at United?

Meanwhile, United are on the lookout for a director of football.

United are eager not to repeat the same mistakes of this summer's transfer window.

The Manchester club have been involved in lengthy negotiations with the Spain worldwide over a new deal for the past six months, and came to what they thought would be an agreement back in June.

United kicked off their new Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Leicester on Friday night.
