'Meyered' in controversy: OSU coach placed on leave

There is proof that Meyer's wife knew about it, and it will be hard for Meyer to claim that he did not. Meyer was expected to appear in TV, radio and digital ads.

The school is investigating what Meyer knew about the alleged abuse by former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, who was terminated on July 23, days after he was served with a protection order involving his ex-wife, Courtney Smith.

In an interview with McMurphy, Courtney reportedly said she and Shelley regularly talked about Zach's abuse in 2015. "I said: 'That's fine, you should tell Urban'". Smith even provided McMurphy with a series of text messages between her and Meyer's wife, Shelley Meyer, in which Meyer offered support and promised to tell her husband about the violence.

Meyer has led the Buckeyes to a 73-8 record since he took over the program in 2012.

Meyer is heading into his seventh season at Ohio State, where he is 73-8 with a national title in 2014 and two Big Ten Conference championships.

Here is Ohio State's "be the best man" doctrine. Shelley is also an Ohio State employee as a registered nurse.

Australian church abuse victims welcome archbishop's resignation
Wilson was convicted in May of failing to report allegations of child sexual abuse disclosed to him in the 1970s. Turnbull, the Australian prime minister, said Monday he was pleased Wilson had resigned, albeit belatedly.

Meyer ended up as the Ohio State coach because of a previous football scandal.

While speaking with reporters at training camp, Apple described Meyer's administrative leave and the investigation as "unfortunate".

"I can't say. I don't know", he said. Brian Voltolini has been on Meyer's staff for 15 seasons, dating back to his days at Bowling Green, according to McMurphy. The Gators went 8-5 in 2010, and afterward, Meyer stepped down for good. "I've seen other coaches who would keep players and try to rehab them ... but I think it (zero tolerance on domestic violence) should be a rule in all of college football".

Meyer said in a statement that he and Gene Smith, Ohio State's athletic director, "agree that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion".

Ohio State is also conducting an investigation, undoubtedly to find out if Meyer knew of the allegations against Zach Smith. The charge was dropped because of insufficient evidence.

Zach Smith was finally dismissed by Meyer on July 23 after an OH court granted a domestic violence protective order to Courtney Smith against her former husband. Zach Smith pleaded not guilty last month. Charges were never filed. The Smiths separated in June 2015 and divorced in 2016. Smith has never been criminally charged. A hearing has been scheduled for Friday. Meyer acknowledges he knew about a 2009 incident when he hired Smith but says he didn't hear of the latest allegation until last week. The Smiths are due in court in September and their lawyers did not respond to messages seeking comment Thursday.
