According to The Hollywood Reporter, Smith is in talks to join Star Wars: Episode IX, which is already in production. We don't even know which side of the war he'll be on.

The news comes from Variety, citing unnamed sources, rather than Lucasfilm, so it's not an official announcement.

Matt Smith is heading to a galaxy far, far away.

So far, it looks like Smith will be joined on set by several new faces. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie (Doctor Who), Richard E. Grant (Gosford Park, Hudson Hawk), Dominic Monaghan (Lost, Lord of the Rings franchise) and Keri Russell (The Americans), who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. Abrams' main priority is bringing the arc of the Skywalker story to a definitive conclusion, ending the story that he began in The Force Awakens with three primary characters: Rey (Daisy Ridley), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), and Finn (John Boyega).

'With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie's legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII'.

Abrams co-wrote the screenplay for Episode IX from scratch with Chris Terrio (Argo) when he replaced Colin Trevorrow as director, who had been working on his own screenplay for the film.

As for Smith, the actor has been enjoying a series of successful gigs lately.

While it does not have a proper title yet, Star Wars: Episode IX will be in theaters on December 20, 2019.
