Star Wars: Episode IX begins filming, J.J. Abrams confirms

Sending his first tweet with a photo of a camera on the Episode IX set, Abrams wrote: "Bittersweet starting this next chapter without Carrie, but thanks to an extraordinary cast and crew, we are ready to go". Finn's got a new vest, with a blurry John Boyega seen talking to Abrams, who is sitting in the pilot's chair in the Millennium Falcon cockpit.

Abrams' social media accounts will be used to share photos and thoughts throughout the production process. Billy Dee Williams will return to reprise his role as Lando Calrissian, while Anthony Daniels will return as C-3PO.

Director J.J. Abrams shared an image and message on Twitter Wednesday that celebrated the first day of production for the ninth "Star Wars" film. Abrams was then lured back to finish what he started, and he began from scratch, co-writing the script with Oscar-winning Argo screenwriter and Batman v Superman co-writer Chris Terrio.

The film, which will conclude the Skywalker family saga, is set for release in December 2019. What is known, however, is that unused footage from The Force Awakens will be employed to bring the late Carrie Fisher into the story as General Leia Organa and that the cast also includes returning performers Lupita Nyong'o, Billie Lourd, Joonas Suotamo and Domhnall Gleeson joined by new recruits Keri Russell, Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant.
