In the 13th career meeting between the two players, Stosur was looking for just her second win against the Australian Open champion and former world No. 1 in their last five matches.

Sixth seed Caroline Garcia brushed aside Johanna Konta in straight sets, and Naomi Osaka, the in-form Kiki Bertens and Daria Kasatkina were among the other seeds to go through in the afternoon session on Tuesday, while 2006 champion Maria Sharapova prevailed.

Ostapenko may have also benefited from an uninspiring buildup to the season's final Grand Slam, crashing out in the first round at Montreal and Cincinnati to leave her fresh going into her opener.

The world number two stood as the highest seed in the tournament with every intention to achieve an early round victory. Then Ukrainian in two sets lost to detchant in the third round of the Australian Open.

"The one thing that probably did let me down was my second serve".

Caroline Wozniacki returns the ball during her women's singles first round match against Samantha Stosur.

A three-time Grand Slam victor against an opponent sitting at 370 in the world rankings and making her first appearance in a major in more than two years would appear a mismatch but it was a contest Kerber approached in a business-like manner.

Tiny pressure leak discovered on International Space Station, NASA says
The official said air was being sucked out through a 1.5mm fracture, which may have been caused by a micrometeorite impact. The hole is located in the upper section of the Soyuz, which does not return to earth, according to NASA .

Undone by eight double-faults and 34 unforced errors as she battled to strike a balance of controlled aggression, Stosur's campaign lasted just 84 minutes.

It took a lot out of her to succeed at keeping Wozniacki back in the game but after she watched the Dane take the fifth so swiftly, the task to stay strong became hard.

Stosur made a confident enough start, firing down two aces to open the match.

"It s definitely hard, it s very hot out here today", said Wozniacki, the highest seed remaining in the women s field after the shock first-round exit of Simona Halep on Monday. "I tried to cool down in between games and use the shade a little bit".

She'll get ready for Thursday's match when she takes on Lesia Tsurenko in the second round.

"It was really not easy out there today", she said.

"She s a tricky opponent, great backhand", Wozniacki said. He specializes in the National Hockey League, WTA Tennis and both summer and winter Olympic sports.
