In addition, the United States has imposed sanctions and taken diplomatic measures against Moscow for its alleged meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, allegations Russian Federation also denies.

The Russian rouble has been pushed steadily lower by U.S. sanctions, the latest of which take effect on Monday, according to a notice posted on Friday in the U.S. Federal Register.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Friday that "all options are on the table" in terms of a response to the sanctions, according to the Interfax news agency.

"The Treasury Department is disrupting Russian efforts to circumvent our sanctions", said Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin.

"The ruble should not be this weak based on, shall we say, fundamentals", said Chris Weafer, a Moscow-based senior partner at the Macro Advisory consultancy.

Bolton, speaking before a new round of sanctions announced by the State Department took effect, set out what he cast as a tough approach by the administration to sanctions.

Sergei Skripal, a former colonel in Russia's military intelligence agency, was convicted of treason in 2006 by a Russian court that found him guilty of spying for Britain.

As explained by LN's Jeff Charles, "The initial step will be to limit exports and financing". These are just the latest in a long line of USA sanctions targeting the Russians.

"There will be no new sanctions, if there is no further intervention [in the election in the US]", said Bolton. The World Bank predicts modest growth for the nation's economy, at least in the short term.

The new sanctions highlight how much worse U.S.

"The ruble should actually be a lot stronger than we are seeing it and the reason it's not is directly linked to the sanctions coming out of the U.S".

Meanwhile, President Putin has blamed U.S. Deep State, asserting that it is the establishment, and not Trump, who wields the real power in Washington D.C. "It's about the position of the so-called establishment, which is ruling [the U.S.] in a broadest sense of the word", he said.

The Trump administration has increasingly used sanctions to address a widening range of foreign policy crises in countries including Turkey, Venezuela, North Korea, Iran and Russian Federation.
