Both lawmakers also weighed in on Meghan McCain's tribute to her father at the memorial service, during which she said her father's America "has no need to be made great again because America was always great".

In 1991, Larson was named commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Command - the same post held by McCain's father.

"I think it pointed up the president's absence but in many instances, Ivanka is the person that represents humanity in place of the president", D'Antonio said.

McCain, who died August 25 aged 81 after a year-long struggle against brain cancer, was interred in a private ceremony in the academy's grassy cemetery overlooking the Severn River. She did it the way her father would want her to do it, she was direct, the way John was'.

The week's memorials, planned mostly by McCain himself in his final year of life, often seemed crafted to draw a contrast between the senator and a man of very different temperament and values with whom he often feuded: Donald Trump.

"Number one, Americans appreciate military service".

As the hearse carrying McCain passed through a gate and into the academy, there was loud applause from the several hundred people lining the street outside on the hot and muggy summer day.

Washington elite mourn McCain while Trump tweets from afar
After the ceremony, McCain was to be laid to rest next to his Naval Academy classmate and friend Admiral Charles Larson. Some people will never recover from that, " tweeted Katrina Pierson, an adviser to Trump's re-election campaign.

"There's a lesson to be learned this week about John McCain", said Graham, R-S.C. "Godspeed" and "Rest In Peace Maverick".

"We should all strive to follow his example and honor his legacy", said Hogan, noting that it was an honor welcoming his family to lay McCain to rest in Annapolis.

On Saturday at the Washington National Cathedral, daughter Meghan McCain fought back tears telling mourners her father transcended his many titles and roles - including sailor, aviator, husband, warrior, prisoner of war, hero, congressman, senator and presidential nominee.

Mr McCain was buried next to his classmate and friend, Admiral Chuck Larson, who reserved four plots in the idyllic cemetery for the pair and their wives before his death in 2014.

Sen. John McCain's widow and other family members joined friends and admirers following a horse-drawn caisson carrying the casket of the longtime senator to the U.S. Naval Academy cemetery.

McCain had the last laugh, though, taking a few parting shots at the current president of the United States in a final letter to America which was read out after he lost his battle with brain cancer last week.

Meanwhile, Katrina Pierson, an adviser to Trump's campaign, came to the president's defense following the weekend of insults. John McCain's funeral procession. So I am totally OK with everything, ' the man added. This was a civics lesson for anybody who wanted to listen.
