Once known as America's Dad for his role on the top-rated "Cosby Show" in the 1980s, the actor was convicted of violating Constand, Temple University women's basketball administrator, at his suburban Philadelphia mansion in 2004.

Ahead of the sentencing, Constand wrote a five-page letter to the court explaining how Cosby's assault - and the ensuing legal battle - had changed her life. Chelan Lasha, who says Cosby assaulted her after giving her a pill in 1986.

Cosby is now free on US$1-million bail until he's sentenced, which is expected to happen Tuesday.

The sentence ensures that Cosby will spend no less than three years behind bars before he becomes eligible for supervised release, though he could end up staying in prison for as much as a decade.

"Equal justice under the law does not allow different treatment because of who he is", Judge O'Neill said.

"I met him in '72 at a place called the Trident, which is a place in Sausalito, California and it happened to be the hub of every celebrity and the place to go", Motsinger said.

This outcome was based upon the merging of two of Cosby's counts due to a deal between the Montgomery County district attorney and his defense, combined with his lack of prior criminal history and "wiggle room" within state guidelines.

Over the years, Philadelphia magazine has chronicled Crosby's decline, at times advancing the story and knowledge of the accusations against the comedian.

While Green said his team wanted Cosby to participate in a program, they did not see how he could "fight off people trying to extort him" at his age.

As sentencing neared, Cosby's wife issued a blistering statement accusing O'Neill of "unethical behavior" and traveled to Harrisburg to file a complaint with a judicial ethics board.

O'Neill denied bail and in addition to years in prison, said Cosby will be classified as a "sexually violent predator", which requires lifetime registration, lifetime mandatory counseling and community notification that a "sexually violent predator" lives in any area he moves to.

"Bill Cosby took my handsome, healthy young spirit and crushed it".

Cosby, a once towering figure in late 20th century American popular culture and the first black actor to grace primetime USA television, risks a maximum sentence of up to 10 years behind bars.

A defense psychologist says the chances that Bill Cosby will commit another sex offense are "extraordinarily low" because he's old, legally blind and needs help getting around.

After testifying for several hours at two trials, the first of which ended in a hung jury, Constand spoke in court Monday for just two minutes.

She added: "I had to relive every moment of the sexual assault in horrifying detail in front of Mr. Cosby and his lawyers".

Constand stood at Steele's side but shook her head to say she had no comment. Since then, multiple women have come forward against "The Cosby Show" star and leveled similar allegations.
