The billionaire founder and chief executive of Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com Inc (JD.O), Richard Liu, was arrested in the US state of Minnesota on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct and later released after what the company said was a false accusation.

Records from Hennepin County Jail showed Liu, founder and CEO of Chinese online retail giant JD.com, was arrested over the misconduct allegations late Friday night and released Saturday afternoon.

The jail records don't provide details of the alleged incident.

University spokeswoman Emma Bauer in a statement declined to comment further and referred questions to the Minneapolis Police Department. "He was released pending formal complaint", Public Information Officer John Elder told AFP. He stressed that the case was still active and that "people can say whatever they like" without affecting the investigation.

EU’s Barnier expects Brexit deal in time, delay into November still ‘possible’
European Union officials say an extraordinary meeting of European Union leaders to seal Brexit is likely in November. Yahoo Finance UK revealed yesterday that the talks will be weekly until a deal is reached or talks are abandoned.

Minnesota law defines five degrees of criminal sexual misconduct, ranging from a gross misdemeanor to felonies, covering a broad array of conduct ranging from nonconsensual touching to violent assaults with injuries.

JD.com founder Richard Liu attends a business forum in Hong Kong, China June 9, 2017.

JD.com is one of China's tech heavyweights, competing with larger rival Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. Liu, 45, is well known in China and has a net worth of US$7.9 billion (A$11.0 billion), according to Forbes.

The firms will marry JD's supply chain and logistics experience with Google technology to create "next generation" personalized retail in regions including Southeast Asia, the U.S. and Europe, both companies said in a statement. Among its other investors is Chinese internet gaming and social media giant Tencent Holdings, the developer of the WeChat messenger app and a major rival of Alibaba, and USA retailer Walmart Inc.
