According to Canada's BNN Bloomberg, the drinks giant is in talks with local producer Aurora Cannabis about developing marijuana-infused beverages.

"Along with many others in the beverage industry, we are closely watching the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient in functional wellness beverages around the world", Coca-Cola said in a statement, referring to cannabidiol, a constituent of cannabis.

Coca-Cola is reportedly watching the cannabis industry and is intrigued by the idea of drinks infused with CBD.

The report said there was no guarantee that talks between the companies would be successful but Aurora shares responded by soaring 22 percent.

A spokeswoman for Aurora Cannabis said the company has expressed interest in infused drinks and intends to enter that market, but it does not discuss business development initiatives until they are finalized.

One of Bloomberg's sources said the drinks in question would fall under the "recovery drink" category.

Every WWE Hell In A Cell Match Ranked From Worst To Best
Hell in a Cell started as a Pay-Per-View in 2009 where it was promoted as the most unique setup for wrestling. It's still a steel cage with a roof that surrounds the ring - that much is the same.

The news comes as more USA states move to legalize marijuana for recreational use and as Canada, where Aurora is based, prepares to fully legalize the recreational use of cannabis next month. The company, with its iconic brands ranging from Coke and Sprite to Powerade, announced it will acquire the Costa Coffee chain for $5.1 billion in August, and has expanded into other products including juice, tea and mineral water over the past decade.

The Bloomberg report follows other deals between USA beverage companies and pot producers in Canada, where recreational use of marijuana becomes legal next month across the country, followed by consumable forms of the drug next year. Heineken NV's Lagunitas craft-brewing label has launched a brand specializing in non-alcoholic drinks infused with THC, marijuana's active ingredient. The new beverages will be pegged to drinkers who suffer with inflammation, pain or cramping.

Both Coke and Aurora, in separate statements, said they were interested in cannabidiol infused beverages but could not comment on any market speculation.

Canada is in the process of legalizing recreational use of marijuana.

In June, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the epilepsy treatment Epidiolex, the first cannabis-based drug allowed in the United States.
