'Do not eat or sell any' Honey Smacks cereal, CDC says

After issuing a recall for Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal in June, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a new warning advising everyone to stay away from the cereal at all costs. As of yesterday, the agency reports 130 cases in 36 US states, with 34 hospitalizations and no deaths.

Delaware, Minnesota and ME are the latest states to join the list of 36 states where illnesses have been reported as part of the outbreak.

FDA reports that recalled Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal is still being sold in some locations, despite the recall earlier this summer. Because the cereal has a long shelf life, many shops and homes may still have it. This is regardless of size or "best if used by" dates. The outbreak is still spreading: three new states reported illnesses in August.

The CDC tweeted a warning to consumers not to "eat this cereal".

The CDC recommends checking your pantry at home to see if you have any Kellogg's Honey Snacks cereal.

People who consume food tainted by salmonella bacteria may develop symptoms including diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after exposure, according to the CDC. If already purchased, consumers should throw it away or return to the place of purchase for a refund.

Illnesses in this outbreak started on dates ranging from Mar 3 to Aug 7, CDC said, adding the investigation is still ongoing. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.

Thoroughly wash the container with warm, soapy water before using it again, to remove harmful germs that could contaminate other food.

Kellogg's voluntarily recalled Honey Smacks in June, citing possible salmonella contamination.
