Congo's Ebola outbreak is still spreading. However control measures seem to be working WHO said

The UN agency is airlifting high energy biscuits from its warehouse in Dubai to Goma, capital of North Kivu province, where an Ebola outbreak was declared on 1 August.

Government authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo say 250 schools in North Kivu and Ituri provinces will open their doors to more than 82,500 children when the new school year begins Monday.

On Wednesday WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it was too soon to say whether the outbreak was stablising due to the difficulty of identifying new cases near rebel-controlled areas.

Twenty patients have received the therapies, and two of them were discharged from treatment after they tested negative for the disease. It can spread quickly through direct contact with blood and other bodily fluids of infected people.

That's the good news, but there are still new cases and concerns among health workers over containing the virus.

"Substantial risks remain, posed by potential undocumented chains of transmission", Friday's World Health Organization statement said, adding that four of the 13 new probable and confirmed cases in the past week were not known to have had contact with any Ebola patients. "The active involvement of concerned communities is key to stopping the spread of the illness".

According to essentially the most modern World Health Group estimates, there had been 116 cases of Ebola, including seventy seven deaths, in the DRC.

The WHO underlined a number of potential channels to further propagate the outbreak, such as high-risk behaviors in some communities including unsafe burials and reluctance towards contact tracing and vaccination; poor infection prevention and control practices in some community health centers; and delays in patients reaching Ebola treatment centers when symptoms develop. WFP wants to reach those who have been in contact with affected people and their families in efforts to limit population movements and prevent the virus from being spread further.

The outbreak in North Kivu is the DRC's 10th since Ebola was discovered there in the late 1970s.

WHO is working with local health care workers on disease control, and together, they are raising awareness about how to handle patients with Ebola and vaccinate people who are most at risk.

Also, for the first time, is deploying five investigational drugs to treat Ebola.
