France Dider Deschamps praises Olivier Giroud for breaking goal drought in win

France claimed their first ever win in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday night as they beat Holland at the Stade de France

Fresh from a successful World Cup bid, French prodigy Kylian Mbappe scored the opener at the Stade de France, slotting home from short range after Blaise Matuidi got in behind the Dutch defence. He's often unjustly criticised. "It happens that strikers have periods when they are less effective", Deschamps told broadcaster M6 after Sunday's game.

"I'm very happy for Olivier".

The rushed nature of those celebrations disappointed the estimated 300,000 fans who took to the streets, and so this time the victorious squad were presented one by one to supporters after the final whistle.

"He's very helpful for us and he's given us the win". We showed that if we really try to play football, then we can play.

"This time we are at the Stade de France, it's full, it's lovely".

France coach Didier Deschamps named the same team that began the world champions' goalless draw with Germany in their opening Nations League fixture on Thursday, with only the injured Hugo Lloris absent from the side that started the World Cup final in Russian Federation.

Packers' Aaron Rodgers injured, leaves games on cart
Aaron Rodgers stood up, tried to put weight on his left leg and then crumbled back to the ground. After getting it checked out in the medical tent, Rodgers was taken to the locker room.

The teams were greeted by an enormous banner that read "world champions" and covered the pitch, before a spine-tingling version of the French national anthem.

Mbappe nearly had his second soon after, narrowly failing to make enough contact with Antoine Griezmann's free-kick to trouble Netherlands goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

Giroud went through the entirety of Les Bleus' triumphant 2018 World Cup campaign without finding the net but the Chelsea striker was on hand to net a 74th-minute victor in Paris after Ryan Babel cancelled out Kylian Mbappe's early opener on Sunday.

The hosts looked in complete control against a Dutch side rebuilding under Ronald Koeman after failing to qualify for Euro 2016 or the World Cup.

Kenny Tete of Lyon did great from the right to set-up former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel for the equaliser on the 67 minute mark.

Giroud's worldwide goal tally now stands at 32, one past the great Zinedine Zidane on France's all-time scorers list.
