One Scottish Remainer Tory MP decried Mr Johnson's intervention as "completely irrelevant" but agreed that the Chequers Plan was a non-starter given the EU's deep opposition to the proposed customs arrangements.

The clash marks the renewal of the parliamentary sitting following the summer recess, raising the curtain on what is likely to be a tumultuous few months as MPs battle over Brexit.

Over the weekend a plot emerged to bring down Mrs May's Chequers proposals - named after the country retreat where the cabinet agreed them - involving Tory election guru Lynton Crosby.

May's plan, which is created to protect cross-border trade with the European Union, will mean Britain loses control over its direction, preventing it from becoming more competitive and doing major trade deals with other countries, he said.

Think tank U.K.in a Changing Europe said Monday that the short-term consequences of failing to get a deal would be "severe and overwhelmingly negative".

"What we need at this time is serious leadership, with a serious plan".

However, Mr Raab was warned against "self-delusion" by former Tory minister Sir Christopher Chope, a member of the Commons' Brexit committee.

Downing Street claimed the current proposals put forward by the prime minister are the "only credible and negotiable plan" suggested from any quarter and that they would deliver on "the will of the people".

But he said that the vote should be on the terms of exit, not on whether Brexit would actually happen, which he said had already been decided.

"That's what people deserve now, because the promises that were made during the referendum campaign are simply not the reality we are facing".

Space station leak caused by man-made hole
Another theory, according to retired Russian cosmonaut Maxim Surayev, is that it was an astronaut in space responsible. The source added: "The person responsible for the act of negligence has been identified".

"Stand Up 4 Brexit" supporters, who also include former foreign secretary Boris Johnson's key ally Tory lawmaker Conor Burns, pledge to fight plans to keep the European Union rules on British goods and free movement in terms of migration.

With Parliament due to return Tuesday from its summer break, Johnson and his fellow Brexit enthusiasts are not the only obstacle May faces as she tries to get her Brexit deal past the Conservative Party, Britain's Parliament and the EU.

"Hopefully not beyond November", she said, adding any further delay would greatly increase the risk of the most damaging scenario of a no-deal Brexit. The embassy posted on their Facebook page yesterday to say they are aware of people's concerns over this, however Connexion has asked if they can confirm they are in active discussions with the French on the plans for British expatriates and if clarifications will come soon.

MPs plan to publish an alternative to May's plan before the Tory party conference at the end of the month with the backing of both Johnson and David Davis, who resigned as Brexit secretary over Chequers and yesterday said he would vote against the deal in the Commons.

He wrote: "The fix is in".

The ex-foreign secretary added: "The reality is that the European Union has so far taken every important trick".

The UK will leave the European Union on 29 March.

Stephen Gethins, SNP Europe spokesman at Westminster, said: "As the deeply damaging consequences of a "no deal" Brexit become clearer, as Scotland's economy continues to outperform the United Kingdom and as people grow increasingly concerned about the future under Westminster rule, support for Scotland's ability to take its own decisions in an independent country will only grow further".

However, Mr Johnson said the Border had been "ingeniously manipulated" by some members of the government to block Brexit.
